Week 1 #breaking3

Here I’ll begin chronicling my sixteen week training leading up to the Eugene marathon. I’ve never really outlined my training in such a public forum so this’ll be new for me.

I should also point out that I will be using the VDOT system to set my training paces. My VDOT measurement was 56.1 based on my half marathon PR time at Cascade Super Fast Half from June 2018. I’ll revisit these after each tune-up race prior to the marathon on April 28.

Unfortunately week one didn’t start as planned. After doing a great 15 mile training run with my running partner Lydia (who had just begun her training for Boston) a few days prior, I came down with my annual bout of bronchitis. Thus, most of my first week training was hampered.

Monday – Rest / XT day

Tuesday – 7 mile easy run

  • My first official training run, and I had to cancel it due to bronchitis. #frustrating

Wednesday – Speedwork (6×800 @10k)

  • Originally planned as a speed session at the track with my running peeps, was turned into an easy run around my ‘hood. Still sick, so figured pushing the lungs this quickly with interval training wouldn’t be helpful.
  • Actual: 6.23 miles @ 8:09/mil

Thursday – 7 mile easy run

  • Still recovering from my sickness, I struggled to hit my easy run pace. It was surprisingly a warm morning (+9c).
  • Actual: 7.17 miles @ 8:12/mile

Friday – 6 mile tempo run (4Mi @ HMP)

  • This was going to be a test. Operating at only ~65% I struggled to maintain MP for the 4 mile tempo portion. At least I tried πŸ˜‚.
  • Actual: 6.26 miles @ 7:21/mile

Saturday – 17 mile long run

  • During my offseason, I ventured out to try a few new running spots. One of those places I discovered and fell in love with was the Derby Reach and the Fort-to-Fort trail system. I was also happy to arrange to connect up for a few miles with Jaylene, a fellow #teamtap Endurance Tap Ambassador. Jaylene and I paced together at the 2018 Scotiabank half marathon. She is currently training for the First Half half marathon and the Boston marathon. Overall a really enjoyable run on a beautiful winter day.
  • Actual: 17.21 miles @ 8:21/mile

Sunday – travel to CancΓΊn
